What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are made from a plastic material that is painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from decay.

Why are they used?

The molars and premolars have chewing surfaces with deep grooves or fissures that are difficult to clean properly, even with thorough brushing. Plaque can build up in these grooves, leading to cavities. Dental sealants provide the chewing surfaces of the back teeth with a shield against decay.

Am I a candidate for dental sealants?

Children usually have dental sealants placed as their molars and premolars come in. However, adults can also benefit from dental sealants for back teeth that do not have dental restorations or decay.

What can I expect during dental sealant placement?

To prepare for dental sealant placement, Dr. James M. Robison will first clean the surfaces of the back teeth thoroughly. The teeth are then rinsed and dried. An acidic solution is used to roughen the chewing surfaces of the teeth. The roughening of the teeth allows the dental sealant to bond in place properly. The teeth are once again dried. Our dentist will then paint the dental sealant onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant may be cured using a special light. You will be able to chew as usual after the dental sealant has hardened.
